Former Treasury Secretary Summers Resigns from AI Company's Directors

Corporate Departure
The economist declared he would step back from public duties after House committee released his regular messages with Jeffrey Epstein

One-time economic leader the Harvard professor is leaving the board at the ChatGPT creator, just a week after a series of electronic messages between him and late convicted sex offender the accused trafficker became public.

The economist remarked in a statement that he was "grateful for the privilege to have served, optimistic about the potential of the organization, and eagerly await following their progress".

The prominent academic, who once led Harvard University, stated on Monday that he would be withdrawing from public roles due to his connections with Jeffrey Epstein.

Email Communications

The freshly disclosed emails demonstrated that the economist corresponded with Jeffrey Epstein until the 24 hours preceding Epstein's 2019 detention for alleged trafficking of minors.

In a separate statement, the artificial intelligence company stated it understood Summers' determination to resign.

"We acknowledge his many contributions and the perspective he provided to the Board," the organization commented.

Legislative Background

This announcement follows after the two houses of the legislative branch decided on recently to endorse a legislation that would compel the Department of Justice to disclose its documents on the case.

The bill will subsequently proceed to the office of the White House for signature. The President has stated he plans to sign the bill, after modifying his position on the issue following pushback from his base.

Correspondence Findings

A collection of Epstein-related correspondence disclosed by the legislative panel last week included multiple prominent individuals in the billionaire's former circle, without suggesting any illegal behavior by those individuals.

The emails revealed that the professor and the financier often met for meals, with he often trying to connect the official to prominent world leaders.

Individual Statement

After the correspondence were released with the wider community, the former official said he assumed "full responsibility for my ill-advised choice to persist in corresponding with Jeffrey Epstein".

He further stated that he wanted "to reestablish confidence and mend relationships with the individuals nearest to me".

Previous Positions

The economist served in senior posts under Democratic administrations; functioning as Treasury chief under the former president, and as head of the economic advisory body under the former leader.

He headed the institution from the early 2000s and is still a academic there. When stating his step-down from public duties earlier on Monday, he indicated he would persist with his educational duties.

Further Repercussions

Following Summers' declaration on earlier this week, the policy organization, a progressive research organization in DC where the professor was a researcher, announced that the economist was not associated with the institution.

Summers became part of the board of the AI company, which creates the AI chatbot, in the previous year - following a defeated move to remove its top executive OpenAI's head.
