Arnaud Kalimuendo Strikes as Forest Claim Nostalgic Win Against Malmö

“You’ll never sing that, champions of Europe,” was chanted around the stadium as Nottingham Forest followers reveled in a further result against Malmö. Much has transpired since Trevor Francis’s winning header clinched the European Cup back in 1979, but the club continue to hold dear those memories. Equally, major changes have occurred in the weeks since Sean Dyche assumed control, with the team looking reinvigorated and earning a convincing win thanks to goals from Kalimuendo, Ryan Yates, and Milenkovic, boosting their prospects of advancing in the European competition.

Gaining Steam with Third Consecutive Win

For Nottingham Forest, this performance – against a Swedish side that had been inactive for nearly a month after finishing sixth in their domestic league – marked a third consecutive win across every tournament and further built on the positive energy generated from last weekend’s success at Anfield. While this fixture was a re-run of the club's European Cup triumph in spirit, the encounter itself was free of any significant tension or jitters.

It proved to be an occasion filled with nostalgia, an longed-for reunion and the third meeting between the teams since the European Cup final over four decades past.

Forest leaned into the heritage, honoring the heroes of that era by giving them, along with their visiting counterparts, the VIP welcome. Thirteen members of the Malmö's squad from that time were also in attendance. The two clubs shared a dinner together prior to the match. Frank Clark, Colin Barrett and company received a rousing reception when they assembled on the pitch a quarter of an hour before the start, and a characteristically impressive tifo was shown in the home stand.

Recalling the Past

“30th May 1979, Robertson crossed it in from the left,” read half of a large tifo, in block capitals. While nobody required a reminder of what ensued, the remaining section was revealed as the squads emerged from the tunnel. “And there’s Francis,” it continued. A second stunning display showed Brian Clough watching events beside his right-hand man Taylor on a dugout at the Munich stadium.

Dominance from the Start

So, the hosts had soaked up those beautiful recollections, but what about the showing on the night? It was strong, as well. They were in full command from the moment Kalimuendo whistled an effort wide inside the opening moments and established a 2-0 advantage by the break. Nicolás Domínguez sent an early header off target and then Abbott, on his first European start, had a go.

It seemed appropriate that Ryan Yates, who joined Forest as an eight-year-old, made the initial breakthrough in the Malmö defence led by their own homegrown captain, Pontus Jansson, previously of Leeds United and Brentford FC. The Forest centre-back Nikola Milenkovic saw a cross cannon off a defender and into the pathway of the midfielder, who finished with his right foot from the edge of the penalty area to register his first goal since March.

Second Strike Confirms Control

The scorer was implicated in the team's second goal on the verge of half-time, as well, his unmarked header parried by Malmö’s goalkeeper Ellborg but Kalimuendo on hand to convert the rebound from close range. McAtee, the playmaker given a seldom start and only his second appearance since the autumn, was the catalyst, lofting a perfect ball towards Yates at the far post.

Just moments before, Callum Hudson-Odoi low effort was deflected wide off Malmö defender Colin Rösler, son of ex- Manchester City striker Uwe Rösler, and an unmarked the defender also previously had a powerful header instinctively saved by Ellborg, who returned in place of the ex- Villa goalkeeper Robin Olsen.

Opponent's Struggles

This was Malmö’s initial game since the domestic league concluded on 9 November, and they struggled to equal Forest’s intensity. The Reds made it 3-0 when the defender applied the finishing touch after his centre-back partner Murillo kept alive a set-piece. The captain had a volley stopped, but the Serbian centre-back Milenkovic feasted on the leftovers.

The home side then went for the jugular, with the winger chipping a effort on to the bar before Sangaré sent an ambitious shot wide from distance. It was that kind of evenings. The manager, aware of the upcoming league game here against Brighton & Hove Albion, made seven changes from the team that surprised Liverpool at Anfield recently, when they also netted three goals, though he called on Elliot Anderson, Dan Ndoye and further fresh legs during the second half.

Smooth Night for Forest

It proved a flawless night for Forest. Dyche could withdraw Murillo with the match long since sewn up and later introduced 19-year-old full-back Jimmy Sinclair for his senior bow. Dyche discussed the club legends providing “valuable insights” at weekly get-togethers and, nearly fifty years on, the present squad demonstrated they are capable of producing of excitement, too.
