Former heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua has been released from care, local government spokespeople announced on Wednesday night. The fighter was caught in a vehicular crash outside Lagos on December 29th, a devastating event that claimed the lives of two of his close associates.
The boxer had remained in the hospital while healing from his light wounds, his management team confirmed on Monday. The Lagos state commissioner for information, Gbenga Omotoso, announced via a post on social media that Joshua was deemed clinically fit to “recuperate at home”.
“Joshua and his mother were at the funeral home in Lagos this afternoon to pay their final respects to his two friends who passed away as they were being readied to be sent home,” Omotosho said.
The victims of the crash were confirmed to be Latif Ayodele, a fitness coach, and Sina Ghami, a performance coach. It was also noted that the boxer was “heavy-hearted and deeply emotional over the passing of his two close friends.”
The news of his discharge arrives after the boxing community had expressed sympathy for the star in the wake of the terrible crash.
