At least 64 individuals lost their lives in a law enforcement action against the criminal organization Comando Vermelho in Rio de Janeiro's north zone - the most extensive and fatal action in the Brazilian state's past.

Four law enforcement personnel were among those killed during the police action in the AlemĂŁo and Penha districts, local authorities stated. More than 80 people were arrested.

Violent conflicts broke out when about 2,500 security personnel moved in on Tuesday morning. The criminal organization reacted using shooting, setting fire to barriers and launching explosives via unmanned aircraft, police representatives said.

The International human rights organization said it was "horrified" by the police operation, demanding "immediate and thorough inquiries".

Operation Impact

The informal settlements close to the aerial transportation hub is considered to be the central command of among the nation's strongest organised crime groups.

Government representatives said at least 50 of the fatalities were "classified by law enforcement as potential lawbreakers".

Numerous individuals were injured, including non-combatants affected by the violence.

Community Response

Residents have likened the elevated neighborhood - inhabited by approximately 300,000 people - to a "battlefield" since the mission commenced.

Organized Crime Spread

The Red Command group has been increasing their control throughout the region, expanding narcotics distribution networks and dominance over the slum communities.

Local law enforcement stated over 200kg (441lb) of illegal substances were seized in the raid, together with numerous weapons.

Operation Background

The combined action by various security forces follows a twelve-month inquiry.

Many of the individuals are thought to be affiliates of a group from the northern region who are currently hiding in Rio de Janeiro.
